Zimmer Persona Knee Implant
Ohio Zimmer Persona Knee Implant Lawyers
Clark Perdue is investigating claims against Zimmer, a medical device manufacturer, regarding its Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate. The Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate is a major component in the Zimmer Persona Knee Implant. Zimmer Manufacturing Company is the largest manufacturer of knee implants in the world with an estimated $7.2 billion in global sales for knee implants.
On March 12, 2015, Zimmer voluntarily recalled approximately 12,000 of these knee components. All unimplanted Persona tibial plates were to be located and quarantined. Prior to the recall, the Persona Knee was marketed as the “most clinically successful knee replacement more personalized than ever.”
The recall was prompted by an increased number of complaints of premature loosening and separation of the metal plate from the bone. Loosening of the knee implant can cause severe pain and require additional surgery. In approximately 28 percent of revision surgeries, the patient did not have symptoms of loosening, but x-rays revealed the problem.
The Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate knee implant is not the first Zimmer medical device to fail. Zimmer NexGen knee implants have reportedly failed at high rates less than two years after implantation. The company also experienced a high failure rate with its Zimmer Durom Cup metal on metal hip implant system.
