Scars from Burn Injuries

Columbus Ohio Burn Injury Scar Lawyers

The Columbus personal injury lawyers at Clark Perdue have extensive experience representing clients who have suffered scar injuries from fires and explosions. Our understanding of scarring, the different types of treatment available for scars, and the emotional toll of dealing with a burn scar injury, enables us to provide a high level of service to burn scar victims.

Burns are extremely painful injuries. In addition, the skin surrounding the burn can pull together or contract. Contracture scars develop when normal elastic tissue is replaced during the healing process by inelastic fibrous tissue. Burn scar contractures typically occur after second or third degree burns.

Burn scar contractures require treatment as soon as possible because the scar can result in restriction of movement in the injured area. If the scar deepens, muscles and nerves may be affected. In addition, because sweat glands and hair follicles do not regenerate in scar tissue, regulation of body temperature is impaired.

Contracture scars do not resolve without treatment. Contracture scars may require physiotherapy, splinting, skin flaps and/or skin grafts.

Burn victims may also develop keloid scars or hypertrophic scars. These scars result from an “over-active” healing process in which an excessive amount of collagen accumulates at the burn site. These scars are red, thick and raised above the burn site. Keloid scars are difficult to treat. Keloid scar treatment can include surgery, radiotherapy, cryotherapy and laser treatment.

Burn scars are frequently extremely disfiguring. This can result in emotional distress, embarrassment and humiliation.
