Scar Injuries

Columbus Ohio Scar Injury Attorneys

The Columbus Ohio personal injury lawyers at Clark Perdue have extensive experience representing clients with scar injuries caused by car accidents, dog bites, fires and explosions, and other types of accidental occurrences. Our deep understanding of scarring, the different types of treatment available for scars, and the emotional toll of dealing with a scar injury. This enables us to provide a high level of service to scar victims.

Scar formation is a normal part of the body’s healing process. When the dermis (deep thick layer of skin) is damaged by cuts, scrapes, surgical incisions, burns or sores, the body releases a protein called collagen to repair the damage. Collagen reattaches the damaged skin, resulting in a scar. Scars can cause significant disfigurement and emotional distress.

Scars have a different texture and quality than the surrounding skin. They are frequently thicker and shinier and may be red, pink or brown. Scars are permanent. They may fade in time, but never disappear completely. The normal healing process requires 12 to 18 months.

There are many factors that determine how someone’s skin scars. The depth, size and location of the wound or incision as well as age, heredity, gender, and ethnicity determine a scar’s characteristics.

There are several types of scar injuries:

  • Keloid scars – large raised scars that can form after injury, burn or surgery
  • Hypertrophic scars – similar in appearance to keloid scars
  • Contracture scars – caused by loss of skin due to burns or other injuries

Visible scars can cause the victim to be self-conscious, which can result in emotional distress. Scars from burns, dog bites, and car accidents can be particularly disfiguring.

While scars can never be completely removed, medical treatment for scars to minimize and improve the appearance are available.
