Motorcycle Road Rash Injury

When motorcycle riders are thrown from a vehicle or lay down a bike, they can suffer motorcycle road rash. This injury tears at the skin, sometimes down to the muscle and bone. It can be difficult to treat and often results in infections or nerve damage. In addition, it can cause long-term scarring and disfigurement.

Generally speaking, road rash injuries come in three degrees:

  • First degree causes skin reddening like rug burn.
  • Second degree occurs with skin breaking that leaves little risk for scarring. When scarring occurs, it may be minimal and can be treated at home with over-the-counter products.
  • Third degree occurs when all five skin layers open. This may be susceptible to infections and is extremely serious.
