Failure to Diagnose Cancer

Columbus, Ohio, Medical Malpractice Lawyers: Failure to Diagnose Cancer

Cancer is the most common disease that physicians fail to timely diagnose. Early detection and treatment of cancer is crucial. Quite literally, it can make the difference between life and death. The earlier cancer is diagnosed and proper treatment is initiated, the greater the chance for survival. Failure to diagnose cancer can be deadly.

Tragically, doctors can fail to recognize a patient’s symptoms until the cancer has progressed to a point that invasive measures are needed or where treatment options are limited or nonexistent. As many as 12 percent of the estimated 1.5 million – or 180,000 – new cancer cases diagnosed each year are missed by a physician or physicians.

Sometimes cancer is missed completely, sometimes it is misdiagnosed. Breast cancer can be misdiagnosed as a cyst or colon cancer misdiagnosed as hemorrhoids. Sometimes a person who does not have cancer is misdiagnosed as having cancer, resulting in unnecessary treatment, pain and distress.

Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis can be caused by:

  • Failure to recognize symptoms
  • Failure to order proper diagnostic tests or screenings
  • Failure to refer to specialists
  • Failure to follow up
  • Improper testing
  • Improper interpretation of tests or screenings
