Proton Pump Inhibitors
Columbus Ohio Injury Attorneys Investigating Kidney Damage Caused by Proton Pump Inhibitors
We are investigating cases of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure in patients taking Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) found in popular stomach acid medications. Popular brand names of PPIs include Nexium, Protonix. Prilosec, and Prevacid. These medications are commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.
In January 2016, a study showed a link between proton pump inhibitors and chronic kidney disease. More recently, a second study published in the Journal of American Medical Association Internal Medicine, revealed that patients using PPis were 28% more likely to develop chronic kidney disease and were at a 96% increased risk of developing kidney failure than patients who used other drugs to treat stomach acid symptoms. As many as 15 million Americans take proton pump inhibitors by prescriptions, and many more take PPIs in over-the-counter medication.
