Tepezza (teprotumumab) is a drug therapy developed to treat Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also known as Graves’ Eye Disease, Graves’ Ophthalmopathy, or Graves’ Orbitopathy. Manufactured by Horizon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Tepezza became the first and only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for TED treatment in January 2020.
TED is a rare, autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and damage to the tissues around the eyes, leading to symptoms such as bulging eyes, redness, pain, and vision impairment. Tepezza works by targeting the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), which is believed to play a significant role in the development of TED. By blocking this receptor, Tepezza aims to reduce inflammation and tissue swelling, improving symptoms and quality of life for patients.
Tepezza & Hearing Loss – What We Know So Far
While Tepezza has provided relief for many TED patients, serious concerns have emerged about its potential side effects, particularly hearing loss and impairment.
Before FDA approval, clinical trial participants reported issues such as hearing loss, hearing impairment, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) after using Tepezza. During the FDA review, Horizon Pharmaceuticals acknowledged these risks but characterized hearing loss as temporary, affecting only about 10% of patients.
However, subsequent studies have painted a different picture:
- A March 2021 study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society revealed that 65% of patients who took Tepezza experienced hearing loss, hearing damage, or tinnitus.
- A February 2022 observational study in the American Journal of Ophthalmology found that 3 out of 5 patients with Tepezza-related hearing loss reported persistent hearing impairment during follow-up appointments, contradicting Horizon’s claim that these issues were temporary.
These findings suggest a much higher prevalence of hearing-related side effects than initially reported, raising questions about the safety of Tepezza and the adequacy of warnings provided to patients.
Tepezza Hearing Loss Lawsuits
Patients experiencing hearing loss or other auditory impairments after using Tepezza are now pursuing legal action against Horizon Pharmaceuticals. These lawsuits allege that Horizon failed to adequately disclose the risks of permanent hearing loss and other hearing-related injuries associated with the drug.
