The Hidden Dangers of Heating Pads and Heated Electric Blankets

Read Length: 2 min

At Clark, Perdue & List, we are dedicated to informing the public about potential hazards associated with everyday products. A recent product liability lawsuit has brought to light the serious risks associated with heating pads and heated electric blankets. This case shows the importance of consumer awareness and safety when using these products.

A Texas woman, Kristin Tiede, has filed a lawsuit against Sunbeam Products, Inc. and Newell Brands, Inc., the manufacturers of her Sunbeam heating pad. The complaint alleges that the defective design of the heating pad caused her to suffer third-degree burns. Tiede’s experience with the product, intended to alleviate edema in her lower extremities, resulted in severe injuries requiring an allograft skin graft.

According to the lawsuit, the Sunbeam Queen Size Heating Blanket unexpectedly overheated and caught fire during normal use, posing significant risks to consumers. This incident is not isolated; it forms part of a troubling pattern of safety issues associated with these products.

CPSC Recalls

In March 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for the Sunbeam Queen Size Heated Blanket, affecting approximately 43,000 units sold in the U.S. This recall was prompted by at least 13 reports of overheating problems. Despite these warnings, the manufacturers continued to sell the heating pads without adequately informing consumers of the risks or issuing timely recalls.

Back in 2001, a similar product was also recalled.  Biddeford Textile Corp. voluntarily recalled about 394,000 electric blankets. The plug that connects the detachable control switch to the blanket can become loose. The resulting poor electrical contacts can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

CPSC and Biddeford Textile Corp. received 34 reports of the electric blankets overheating, melting and scorching.

If you or a loved one has experienced similar burn injuries from a heating pad or heated blanket, it is crucial to seek legal advice. At Clark, Perdue & List, we offer free consultations and case evaluations to help you understand your rights and options. The serious risks posed by defective products necessitate prompt action to ensure your safety and secure any compensation you may be entitled to.
