The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent warning regarding defective battery chargers, in particular the SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 battery chargers, urging consumers to stop using these products immediately due to the risk of serious injury or even death.
The Danger Behind the Chargers
The SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 chargers are marketed as “universal” devices designed to charge 36-volt lithium batteries commonly used in micromobility products like e-bikes and scooters. However, these chargers are anything but universal. When used with incompatible batteries, they can cause the connected battery to ignite, leading to fires or other thermal incidents. CPSC has received 47 reports of such incidents, including three cases of burn and smoke inhalation injuries and three instances of property damage totaling over $100,000.
What to Look For
Consumers can identify the defective chargers by checking for the brand name “SafPow” with model number “SPC-42020” or the brand name “AMPOWSURE” with model number “ASP-C10S42020” printed on a label on the charger. These products, sold primarily on Amazon.com and eBay.com from January 2021 to the present, typically retail for between $10 and $31.
What Should You Do?
If you own one of these chargers, the CPSC’s advice is clear: immediately stop using the product and safely dispose of it. Continuing to use these chargers could put you, your family, and your property at significant risk.
In addition to discontinuing use, consumers are encouraged to report any hazardous products or product-related injuries to the CPSC through their website at www.SaferProducts.gov. This can help prevent further injuries and hold manufacturers accountable for distributing dangerous products.
