Lamictal®
What is
Lamictal® (lamotrigine)?
Lamictal® (pronounced "lah-MIK-tal") is an antiepileptic drug
manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
Lamictal® has
been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for
treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. It can also be used in
adults and children, 16 years of age or older, with generalized seizures
associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Lamitcal is a
prescription drug and is not available for over-the-counter purchase.
How
does Lamictal® work?
Brain cells need to work (or, "fire") at a certain rate to function
normally. During a seizure, brain cells work, or fire, much more rapidly than
normal. Lamictal® helps slow down this process. By doing so, Lamictal® can stop
seizures at the very outset.
The
side effect.
Lamictal® has been found to have the potential for the serious side effects of
severe, potentially life-threatening rash, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome
and toxic-epidermal necrolysis.
If you
or a family member has taken Lamictal® and has experienced these side effects,
