What is Arava? ®

PillsArava ® (leflunamide) is a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It belongs to a class of drugs known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD's) which are used to slow the spread of rheumatoid arthritis.

Who manufacturers Arava? ®

Arava ® is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, the world's third largest pharmaceutical company. Arava ® was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration on September 11, 1998.

What is the problem with Arava? ®

Studies have linked Arava ® to severe liver disease. As a result, on July 13, 2010 the FDA issued new warnings, regarding severe liver injury, to doctors and other health care professionals who prescribe Arava. ®

The decision to add information on severe liver injury to the Boxed Warning followed the FDA's review of adverse event reports which identified 49 cases of severe liver injury, including 14 cases of fatal liver failure, between August 2002 and May 2009. Read the FDA alert here.
